Just so ya know...

...TK has decided to air-condition the hall, and they're, well, making us donate and collect donation for it.

Now as you all [should] know, I like collecting donations and stuff, and I collected $100 in three days for some NCC Beach Cleaning thing. I haven't collected a single cent for the funding needed to air-condition the hall.

And for good reason.

You see, I collect donations willingly and enthusiastically if the money/things collected will go to charity or helping people study or giving people a second chance and stuff. And I still don't like people. If it's to protect the environment, do something about pollution/global warming and the such, I'm all up for it.

The air-conditioning of the hall is the total opposite of that. Think about it. Air-conditioning the hall for probably 12 (Or more) hours a day, coupled with the staff room, the general office and the auditorium.

I am seriously against this. Firstly, some teachers can't even close the doors of the staff room or HOD room or whatever (And yes, I actually helped close them), which are air-conditioned.

Personally, I think that we can all do without the air-conditioning. We'll all live through it, right? And it's not as though we'll be very uncomfortable and stuff. And even more personally, I think a little discomfort for us humans is better than killing the environment.

Sure, other schools and places have more air-conditioning and they would be even more environmentally-unfriendly, but do we have to add to that? Think about it. Think about the hours they'll leave the air-conditioning on and the hours students actually spend inside the hall. I do not think they school is so vigilant so as to turn the air-conditioning on and off when they have better things to do.

Also, after a while inside the air-conditioned hall, people will start feeling cold and I doubt that the staff will be kind enough so as to let the students go outside for some warm sunshine.

Also, have you ever noticed how the hall is structured? There are gaps in the walls. Big gaps at that. If the school were to install air-conditioners in the hall, I would think that they'd have the common sense to renovate the wall. Why waste the money, energy and electricity?

Wouldn't helping students from needy backgrounds be a better thing to do with the money? Or a scholarship instead, to motivate them to do well. Or to do more CIP things, like helping poor families, orphans and the such.

For the 'comfort' of a tiny percentage of the human population, will you permanently scar the already horribly wounded face of the environment? Will you stand for it?

I know I won't, and I will not let this matter rest without trying to stop it. Call me all you like, I'm going to do everything in my power to stop this. Yes, stop. I'm sorry if any of you disagree with me, but I think that your comfort and how it will affect your 'O' Level grades are bullshit. There are more important things than you or your studies (Yes, there are).

If any of you support me in this matter, please contact me as I shall be writing a letter to Mr Lee regarding the matter and the more support I can get, the better.

It's not all about you.

Your favourite nature-loving treehugger,
Az

Yeah and like come on, it would also probably get so cold that the students can't pay attention to their papers.

Sidetracking, I thought fundraising translated to 'TRY to get money'. My teacher said to me, when I told her I couldn't sell any, "Then tell your parents to cover all five booklets. You have no choice. Tell them what the school as done for you all these years. Or I'll talk to them on Parents' Day."

Um, hello?
Are we THAT eager for air-conditioning?

Well I get what you're trying to say with 'going green' and all, but I do think having thoughts of eradicating the plans of air conditioning the hall is quite ridiculous.

Firstly, with global warming paving its way, the temperature in Singapore will rise. No qualms about it. It will no longer be bearable to sit for your exams in the afternoon without feeling uncomfortable.

Next, you might say 'then why are we still contributing to global warming?' Well, how small is TK compared to Singapore? And how small is Singapore compared to the rest of the world? To put it simply, air conditioning a single hall will not add on to global warming. If you want to sign a petition, sign it against George Bush who doesn't give a shit about the environment. (USA fyi has the highest energy consumption the last time I checked) Even if Singapore becomes a heavily polluted country (which I don't see happening in the near future), the effect of it on the rest of the world is minimal if not none.

Also, it's not all about giving comfort to the students. Think of it as polishing the school image. Many schools (not just the top few ones) have air conditioned halls. (ACSI has an airconditioned canteen, classrooms, and probably hall as well) TK cannot lose out in this aspect. It would be nice to say to visitors 'oh, we have an air conditioned hall too'.. well you get the gist.

Lastly, sitting next to a fan while taking your exam may prove to be a bitch. Not sitting next to a fan may prove to be a bitch as well.

I agree with the global warming and the "no use for a lil more air-con" thing that u said.Even FT goes "ONLY SIX DOLLARS?!" I mean like come on.

Anyway, TK's has been collecting that "air-con fund" for years now. Since 2004 they've been saying that, really doubt the trustworthiness of this drive.

But if there's any reason why I'm not in support of this it's because what Gnaizda said is right. Since I was sec 1 they've been bullshitting about air con halls and if I remember correctly we did donate and stuff yet 4 years later nothing happened.

Still, I'm out of the school already so I don't really care. :p

Was just giving my two cents worth. Plus I just thought I'd write something long since I was bored.

i support u!! same goes to me: im not collecting a cent.
well, who goes round asking people for money for the SCHOOL??

like the school's poor or smth.

HELLO. i go around my family for donations during CNY. their reaction is:
them: "which charity??"
me: "uuh. the school. get air con"
them: "your sch no money meh? isnt it their responsibility to get the money and making it a condusive environment for study??"
cousin: "HAHA. my sch hall got air con already. i no need waste time ask for donation at all"

i've already wasted enough pocket money donating for the past 2 years. -_- and people donated hundreds for tiles for the wall.

and then, as you said, they need renovation.
can they afford it?? the hall is a must for every school. closing it for renovation for 3 months aint something a school would do.

You rock Az. (:
So much for feeling more comfortable during exams and tricking us to "donate money" when it actually goes to somewhere else.
They could install aircons for other places such as classrooms which I think thats a much better use.
Anyhow, I'm so supporting you. :D
